I have really been trying to figure out this whole 12 team CFP. One thing I have became more and more aware of is that the championship games can play a huge role in the way the final bracket looks....Not the final poll, but the bracket. Just imagine a scenario where a 3 loss team were to be in their conference's championship game, and then win it. That 3 loss team will not only make the playoff bracket, but will be a top 4 seed and get a first round bye. This can kick a team that is way more deserving of a bracket spot, completely out of the bracket.
Another scenario is a 2 loss team going into the Conference championship game. They are solidly in the playoff field, but lose in the CG. This loss knocks them completely out of the playoff bracket. Is it foreseeable for teams to actually "Opt Out" of their conference championship games for fear of missing the playoffs and a chance to win a National Championship?
The way I see it there are only 2 options (Other than just leaving it like it is).
Option 1: Eliminate conference championship games. Award the conference championship by virtue of regular season results, with tie breaking criteria, and in the outside case of all that still ending in a tie, then crowning Co-Champions for that year.
Option 2: Make the final playoff bracket before all conference championship games. Eliminating the automatic bid to conference champions. Let the poll dictate where a team is seeded (With the one exception being the G-5 at large bid).
I prefer Option 1. What say you?
