Larry Burton Larry’s losers in the SEC-Week 9

Longtime writer Larry Burton joins The Cafe and gives his insights.
Boy last week was another exciting showdown in the SEC and the upset bug chewed the butts off more than a few top contenders. We didn’t see Texas, Bama, or Kentucky losing but all were outlasted by the underdogs. In the case of Texas, they were just run out of the stadium! What this says is that it’s still anybody’s race in the SEC except the bottom dwellers.

Will this week have as many upsets? Well, let’s get to the listing and see what you think!

Missouri at Alabama – The Midwest Meeyowers bring the Missouri Cat Showdown to T-Town to try and earn another blue ribbon victory, but these Pachyderms ain’t providing no ribbons, but they might be merciful and hand out some band-aids at the end of this one.

Both these teams had big upset losses in the past and while neither wants to have another, this one won’t be quite an upset because these Crimson Tiders are expected to win in this one.

So this will just be another Tiger by the tail story for Bama and this Tiger on the loser’s list will be Missouri.

Auburn at Kentucky – This is a Pussycat party when the Tiggers from the Plains come up to catch the Kentucky Kitties napping and nab a win right under their fan’s noses. But as Lee Corso often says, “No so fast my friend.”

Auburn is struggling just to stay out of the cellar, while Kentucky is playing for pride and post-season pleasures and we see that most of the fur flying is Tiger orange in this one.

So, when in doubt, never trust Auburn, so that’ll put them on Larry’s loser list yet again and I hope they don’t disappoint me again.

Oklahoma at Ole Miss – Oh me! It’s Okie at Oxford to take on the Rebels and we’re expecting a tighter game than most unless the wheels just fall off the old Schooner.

Oklahoma’s first year in the SEC hasn’t been without its bumps, and a win here would really rekindle the flame in the fans of the Sooners, but Kiffin’s Kommandos still have visions of making the playoff party so with home field as well as a tougher team, the Okie fandom may just have to deal with one more disappointment this season. Their tires have looked pretty flat this season.

This is one of those momentum games that we fear to predict as either team could catch fire and come away a winner, but we think the Rebs are just a shade better, so put Oklahoma on Larry’s losers list.

Arkansas at Mississippi State -Oh when will the Dogs have their day? This is as good a chance as they may get when they host the Hogs in Starkvegas today. This pack of Pooches are trying hard not to wind up in the cellar of the SEC, and others are trying to give them a run for the money for that position, but this may not be their day.

Now I know I preach home field has its advantages, but these Mississippi Mutts fold faster in the fourth quarter than a poker player with a pair of twos.

So we’re counting on these Pigs to prove we know what we’re talking about here, and what we’re saying is that Larry’s loser should be Mississippi State.

LSU at Texas A&M – The tried and true Tigers from the Bayou boundaries call on Kyle Field’s own Aggies for a showdown that will leave someone out in the cold and maybe someone in the fold for a playoff spot.

This is going to be a hard-fought close game that will come down to who has the most turnovers. Both teams are among the SEC’s top, and then 12th Man makes it hard to pull off a win on this weathered field.

But LSU has been tested a little more than the Aggies, so we’re going with that and maybe a little bit wiser coach and putting Texas A&M on Larry’s loser list.

Texas at Vanderbilt – What a head-scratcher this is. Vandy beat Alabama, Alabama beat Georgia, and Georgia beat Texas, so doesn’t that make Vandy the sure pick? Such are the questions that drive a prognosticator crazy.

What this does mean is that believe it or not, Vandy has a puncher’s chance here, especially since the Cows were short-horned by Georgia last week in a thorough beatdown. So I wouldn’t be surprised to see it close.

But the Steers’s tear-stained cheeks just have a little too much talent for me to see this going the other way, so let’s list Vandy as Larry’s loser, but keep a close watch on this one.

Well, that’s it for this week folks! Right now I’ve been touring Spain and Portugal and a nighttime game may kick off at one in the morning over here. But I’ve been studying the film, doing my best, and getting my butt chewed off by the Upset Bug so far this season.

Well, you pick a few of those upsets right and then you miss a few. Boy, this has been a tough season to try and vacation and pick the perilous pigskin parties this year. But I hope you appreciate me giving it the old college try. So till next week, grow some new fingernails to gnaw off and we’ll see you back here next week.
