Lets take a stab at guessing what the first CFP poll will look like come Tuesday. I for one think it will be a bit different than the AP Poll, but probably not by a whole lot. So with that said, I think I will kind of start with the current AP Poll (The poll prior to yesterday’s games), and tweak it for how I think the committee will do.
#1: Oregon. They beat Michigan State yesterday by 3 touch downs, so I think they will hold serve in today’s poll, and I think they will be the unanimous choice for the #1 team in the CFP poll as well.
#2: Georgia. They of course won a hard fought game against Florida. A game that any SEC follower knows is a rivalry game, and we all know rivalry games can go either way. The fact that it was a hard fought affair doesn’t diminish the win for Georgia in my opinion. And with the activity below them, I don’t see them losing their #2 spot, and should be the #2 team in the CFP poll.
#3: Penn State. They lost, a good game against a great opponent, but they still lost. I see them dropping to around the 10th position in the AP. But since the committee can use a little bit of latitude with the eye test, and also with the influence of the strength of schedule. I think the CFP will place them somewhere around the 8th position.
#4: Ohio State. With the win over the #3 Penn State Nittany Lions, and on the road at that, They will inarguably move to the #3 position in the AP. Who knows….. The AP voters may put them over Georgia since UGA struggled a bit, and I could not fault them if they do, but with the lack of spots ahead of the Buckeyes, I think they can only move up 1 spot. That is where the CFP committee will place them as well.
#5: Miami. Well, it was not pretty, and the score is a bit misleading as to how hard this win came for the Canes, but they did win over Duke. However, luckily for them, a lot of teams had this weekend as their bye week, and I think that will benefit Miami. They will move up to #4 in the AP……but as Corso says, Not so fast on the CFP. I think using the eye test, I think the committee puts Texas into the #4 spot, and Miami, due to the before mentioned struggles will be in the 5th position in the CFP poll.
#6: Texas. One of the top teams to be off yesterday, but due to Penn State losing ahead of them, I think Texas takes over the 5th position in the AP, and will be the #4 team in the CFP poll.
#7: Tennessee. Won against Kentucky, but that game was still in doubt late in the 4th. However, they shouldn’t drop because there was a good bit of volatility behind them, which kind of eliminates anyone that could move ahead of them. The committee may see things a bit differently though. With all that said, just as Miami benefits from other teams having bye weeks, and contenders behind them not fairing well, UT will move up #6 in the AP, but I am going to predict that the committee gives that #6 spot in their poll to Touchdown Jesus, and UT will be #7 in the CFP
#8: Notre Dame. Bye week yesterday, but we all know how Notre Dame really doesn’t have to do much to be a ranked team. They have a pretty bad loss on their record(Northern Illinois,) but it was back in week 2. Memories fade….. I think they move up to #7 in the AP, and as mentioned, will be the #6 team in the CFP.
#9: BYU. The Cougars was not in action yesterday either. However those losses behind them will allow them to move up. I think the AP puts them at #8, but the committee will keep them at the 9th position.
#10: Texas A-&-M. LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL….Snort…..LOLOLOLOL….Catches Breath, giggle. What can I say? They lost, to a South Carolina that has not been impressive since beating Kentucky in week 2. I think that will drop them way down…..wayyyyyy down. The Aggies will likely land somewhere around the 18th position in the AP, and the committee will likely do the same.
#11: Clemson. Loss to an unranked Louisville. Bad loss to anyone in the ACC camp. AP drops them to 19th, and so will the CFP committee.
#12: Iowa State. It would seem the Cyclones received a dose of reality yesterday. But let’s face it, they have had a pretty good run for a team that wasn’t even in a real conference a few years back. Not that the Big 12 is a real conference….. Anyway, I-State loses to an unranked Texas Tech. I think that will drop them down to the 20th position in both polls.
#13: Indiana. The Hoosiers won against Sparty, and with what all happened in front of them, they will earn a bump, even if nobody outside of Indiana has any idea of what Hoosier is. The logical place for the AP to place them will be the 9th slot, but I am going to predict that the CFP committee will do a slight shake up here. I think they put them at the 11th hole. Standby for who I think will jump them.
#14: Alabama. The Crimson Tide was off yesterday, but as with many others, they will benefit from head scratching losses ahead of them. The AP will move Bama to the 11th position. But here is the shake-up. Bama plays in the SEC. And those committee members that know ball knows there just isn’t an easy out in the SEC. Bama will be given the #10 CFP poll position.
#15: Boise State. The Bronco’s only loss was in a close tilt with the current consensus #1 team, Oregon. With a win yesterday against the juggernaut that is San Diego State….lol, couldn’t do it with a straight face….but with that win, Boise will move up to 12th in the AP, and I predict the CFP committee will follow suit.
#16: LSU. The Tigers were idle yesterday and I believe that LSU will be the first team to not benefit as much as others from it. I think the AP moves them up to 14, but the CFP will put them at 13th. More on LSU a little later down the line
#17: Kansas State: Lost to an unranked and below .500 Houston. AP punishes this horrible loss by dropping them out, and the Committee will not give them a look at all.
#18: Pittsburgh. Loss to SMU. Pretty good game, and both teams were ranked closely. So, with that said. I think that Pitt will drop down to the 23rd slot in the Associated Press poll, and the committee will do the same.
#19: Ole Miss. My Rebels put on a passing clinic yesterday with a 32 point win over Arkansas. Here is where I re-visit the LSU situation. I think the AP will move Ole Miss above LSU in their poll with a #13 ranking, but the Committee, looking at the head to head Rebel loss to the Tigers, will not be as impressed. However the Rebels will be the #14 CFP team.
#20: SMU. Good, solid win over Pittsburgh. The AP and CFP will rank the Mustangs at 15th in the nation.
#21: Army. Man, I like seeing these guys win, and win they do….in fact they have not lost a game this year. If it weren’t for their SOS, I would see them much higher up my list, as well as in the National polls. 16th in both polls is where I see the Black Knights landing.
#22: Washington State. The Cougars will benefit from their bye week coming on a week where the top ranked teams were being upset. They will get moved to the 17th spot in the AP, and the CFP will do the same.
#23: Colorado. Cannot say enough about how Prime has this team playing. In fact, I struggled over whether they may jump Washington State in the AP or not, since both were off yesterday…. But they wont. I think the AP puts them at #22 and I predict that the committee puts them in the 21st slot, and that is because of higher ranked teams that lost, falling into possible spots that the Buffs could have been awarded.
#24: Illinois. Losing to an unranked Minnesota when you are only the 24th team in the nation…. Well I don’t have to put much explanation here. They are out of the polls and wont even get mentioned in the room during the committee meeting.
#25: Missouri. They were off yesterday as well, and will benefit some from the volatility of the games yesterday. I predict #21 in the AP, but the CFP will give them the #22.
The remaining spots in the AP for this week are the 24th, and 25th spots. I think the AP gives the #24 spot to the Vanderbilt Commodores after winning against Auburn and becoming bowl eligible for the first time in…..Well its been a long time. The 25th spot will go to the Louisville Cardinals with their win over the #11 Clemson Tigers. With Louisville’s win being over a highly ranked team, I believe the committee will put them ahead of Vandy.
So to recap, I predict that this weeks AP poll will look like this:
(1) Oregon, (2) Georgia, (3) Ohio State, (4) Miami, (5) Texas, (6) Tennessee, (7) Notre Dame, (8) BYU, (9) Indiana, (10) Penn State, (11) Alabama, (12) Boise State, (13) Ole Miss, (14) LSU, (15) SMU, (16) Army, (17) Washington State, (18) Texas A-&-M, (19) Clemson, (20) Iowa State, (21) Missiouri, (22) Colorado, (23) Pittsburgh, (24) Vanderbilt, (25) Louisville
And in my first try to ever guess what the CFP Poll will look like.
