What a Saturday huh? No doubt about it, College Football is the greatest sport of all time. Of course that is easy for me to say after arguably one of the best wins in my lifetime at Ole Miss. However, I have been on the flip side of that coin many times, and I still made the same claims. It is because of days like yesterday, that makes those bad days worth enduring.

Enough of the sappy shit.

Lets discuss what happened yesterday from a perspective of the CFP rankings shall we?
  1. Oregon vs Maryland - Oregon wins (39 - 18).
  2. Ohio State vs Purdue - OSU wins (45 - 0)
  3. Georgia vs (16) Ole Miss - Ole Miss wins (28 - 10)
  4. Miami vs Georgia Tech - Georgia Tech Wins (28 - 23)
  5. Texas vs Florida - Texas wins (49 - 17)
  6. Penn State vs Washington - PSU wins (35 - 6)
  7. Tennessee vs Mississippi State - Tennsessee wins (33 - 14)
  8. Indiana vs Michigan - Indiana wins (20 - 15)
  9. BYU vs Utah - BYU wins (22-21)
  10. Notre Dame vs Florida State - Notre Dame wins (52 - 3)
  11. Alabama vs (15) LSU - Alabama Wins (42 - 13)
  12. Boise State vs Nevada - Boise State wins (28 - 21)
  13. SMU – Idle
  14. Texas A&M – Idle
  15. LSU (Listed above - Hosting Alabama
  16. 16 (Listed above - Hosting Georgia)
  17. Iowa State vs Kansas - Kansas wins (45 - 36)
  18. Pittsburgh vs Virginia - Virginia Wins (24 - 19)
  19. Kansas State – Idle
  20. Colorado vs Texas Tech - Colorado Wins (41 - 27)
  21. Washington State vs Utah State - Washington State Wins (49 - 28)
  22. Louisville – Idle
  23. Clemson vs Virginia Tech - Clemson Wins (24 - 14)
  24. Missouri vs Oklahoma - Missouri Wins (30 - 23)
  25. Army vs North Texas - Army Wins (14 - 3)
So, there is the scoreboard from yesterday for the teams ranked in the CFP top 25 (Not the AP- but the only poll that really matters anymore)

We see both the #3 and #4 teams get beaten, so I dont expect either to fall out of the top 12, but there has to be movement inside the top 12. I am nervously awaiting the new rankings Tuesday night.

Winners
(By winners I am talking about from a movement in the poll standpoint)
Losers
(By losers I am talking about from a movement in the poll standpoint)
Ole Miss - I fully expect them to move up to around the 12th position. With a very quality win over the #3 team in the playoff poll, and 2 of the teams ranked between the Rebels and the top 12 were idle, and the other team (LSU) losing. I just hope this is how it plays outGeorgia - I dont think that loss will drop them completely out of the top 12, but I think they will land somewhere around the 6, 7, or 8 position. This is important as as long as they stay in the range of 5-8, they get to host a round one playoff game.
Texas - Dominant win yesterday over a Florida team that had been playing much better as of late. That win coupled with Georgia and Miami losing in front of them, should put the horns into the #3 spot. Huge movement for them considering a first round playoff bye comes with that ranking.Miami - No other way to say it other than just a devastating loss for the Hurricanes. To lose to an unranked Georgia Tech is not what a true #4 team would do. I am going to say it, that ranking was a paper ranking. The CFP committee hands were tied with the Cane's record, but it was a paper ranking. I have no idea how far they will fall, but I think with who they lost to, it has to be down to the area of 9-12.
Penn State, Tennessee, Indiana, BYU, Notre Dame, Alabama, and Boise State.... The #6 - #12 teams all won, and I think they just move up 2 spots each, due to the 2 top 12 teams losing in front of them. Of course, I think that Georgia will slide into one of these spots, and possibly Miami too. So it will all come down to how the committee weighs the "Quality" of those losses versus the 'Quality" of these teams wins.LSU - I know they were not in the top 12, but I am putting them in this writing here because that loss gave them 3 losses total, and 2 conference losses. The Tigers are not mathematically eliminated from the SEC race yet, so the only way I see them making the playoff field now, is to somehow make it to Atlanta, and winning the SEC, which will earn them one of the top 4 spots. Since I do not see that a very big probability, I consider LSU a big loser yesterday.
Alabama- I know I listed them in the group above, but I feel that win over LSU, being the only other win over a ranked team inside the top 12, I wanted to touch on it some. As for how the eye test can benefit them is not known as this time, but I think their dominant road win has to be weighted more than the "MEH" home win for Tennessee over Mississippi State. So It is my opinion that Alabama will jump Tennessee in the next offering of the CFP poll. The ACC - Yep, the conference is a LOSER. With their only true hope for a National Champion, Miami, losing in embarrassing fashion. They are done. Unfortunately for AMERICA.......... The winner of the ACC still gets an automatic bid and with that bid, a first round bye. So..... While I consider the ACC as a loser, they are a lucky loser.

As for the top two positions. Oregon and Ohio State were winners on the day, but they are where they will be in the poll regardless. I also want to say right here to @RTR2006 that I apologize about the bracket misunderstanding by me last week. You actually posted the correct bracket, and I will have to fix mine this week. I was going just off of the CFP Rankings, but the bracket takes into effect projected conference winners. Therefore having BYU in the 4th position in the bracket was correct since they are the projected Big 12 winner. The Same kind of thing can be said about Miami. They should still be projected as the ACC champion, and while I see them falling way down in the actual rankings, but they will still get a top 4 bracket position and a first round bye.

Come on folks, lets talk about this.... Tell me how I am wrong.

In this newest incarnation of the SEC, the one true King of CFB, I hope that when playoff designations are made that the powers that be factor in that the SEC is a dogfight every week. The apparent parity that we’ve reached may cost the conference as a whole when it comes to making the playoffs.
On the other hand, SEC bias may also play into it.

I see your point, but I dont think I would want to trade away that parity (Not that you were suggesting it). My reasoning is that how many times have we read that the SEC is "top heavy"?

Every "Danny Kanell" in the country always said we (The SEC) were Bama and Georgia, then everyone else. That the middle of the pack SEC teams were just average. Now I dont think that Bama and Georgia coaches, and fans would agree with that. As youve stated, we all been around awhile (sans Texas and Oklahoma), and we all know that on any given Saturday our worst can beat our best. As you said, its a dogfight every single weekend, and there just isn't an easy out. But that doesn't stop those talking heads out there from continuing to beat that drum of the top heavy SEC.

As a whole, the SEC is a better conference. But you have a fair point. The very thing that is going to make us a better whole, may hurt us in the playoffs. So with that said, the spots we do get in the brackets, we have got to make them count, because we may not get many.
