I have taken a look at the Big 10, now its time for me to look into the Big 12. Who is in the hunt for that automatic bid as well as any at large bids, and their paths to getting there.
The Big 12 standings are as follows (Again only listing teams with a realistic chance to win the conference), And guys......that is only 2 teams
#1 is BYU, and #2 is Colorado. BYU is 9-0 overall and 6-0 in the conference, while Colorado is 7-2 overall and 5-1 in conference. Sure, sure, sure, Colorado could lose to Utah, Kansas, and Oklahoma State, however I just dont see that happening. However, if one of those teams were to pull off the upset, Kansas State holds the tie-breaker against Colorado.
So, Lets look at Kansas State just to make sure we cover all bases. They are 7-2 overall, 4-2 in conference play, and currently ranked 16th in the CFP. Their remaining games are Arizona State, Cincinnati, and Iowa State. This can get real testy if Colorado were to fall coming down the stretch, as Kansas State has the toughest schedule of all the contenders. Arizona State and Iowa State both have the same record as K-State, and I am just not smart enough to figure out who and what can happen in that log jam of 4-2 conference teams.
BYU has Kansas, Arizona State, and Houston, in that order. Of those three, Az. State is the only team that is above .500, and Houston is 3-3 in conference but one game below .500 overall. So again, It can happen, but I just dont think it will.
In the end though, I think Colorado and BYU cake walk into the Big 12 CG. The shake-up can come from Colorado winning the Big 12 championship game. Currently BYU is ranked 6th and seeded 3rd in the bracket, while Colorado is ranked 17th in the CFP poll. The question would come to just how far would BYU fall if Colorado were to win the Big 12 CG. Could they fall all the way out of top 12? IF they fall past #11, they will not make the bracket because of the G5 At Large Bid (Unless one G5 Team such as Boise is ranked higher than 12th).
The Big 12 is a way harder conference to pick at this moment, but as we know, the picture will get clearer and clearer as each week pases.
