Well, here I am writing my first edition of the Grizzly Aftermath. Let’s just say I am going to need the whole pot of coffee I just brewed to go over the litany of things that need talked about in what can only be described as a weird failure for us OSU fans.

First off I want to say congrats to Oregon for playing a whale of a game. Dan Lanning is a great coach and he had his team and fans ready to go. Oregon returned a vast majority of their team from last year and added what I would consider a better QB in Dillion Gabriel to the mix. This was not a slouch Oregon team and they played the perfect game.

The first half felt very off to me. Ohio States mix of run and pass was well, not mixed. It was either straight passes or straight runs. Luckily it didn’t matter, as Oregon couldn’t stop either. An early turnover by our former Ole Miss friend Quinshon Judkins took what likely would have been another 7 off the board for our O and resulted in a stolen possession for Oregon that led to them scoring 7 and getting their crowd back into the game.

Another turnover from a crazy squib kick hits our up man and Oregon again steals a possession and it results in another score (FG) for Oregon. A 10 point swing with the turnover battle.

In a back and forth first half that resulted in OSU losing 2 of their starting offensive lineman to injury, it almost felt like HT was a welcome sight to figure out our capabilities with the backups on O line and to fix the D and make things right. Halftime Oregon 22 and OSU 21.

Unfortunately the second half came and while stops were made, the penalties kept adding up. OSU had 8-70 to Oregon’s 3-25 for the game. The crowds impact was surely felt and it didn’t help keep false starts from happening with 2 backup lineman.

That said, the biggest problem was our defensive scheme. Knowles (D coordinator) insisted on playing a 4 man front and allowed Oregon to pick us apart. A night when we needed to play 2 high safeties, this was absent and accounted for multiple Oregon big plays when there was no over the top help. Not sure what the issue was, but our D line and Linebackers could not get home and or tackle which resulted in multiple Oregon scrambles for key first downs that otherwise would have been forced punts. I feel confident the scheme and tackling issues can be fixed going forward, but that remains to be seen.

The PI on our freshman WR at end of game seemed ticky tacky, but it is what it is. That cost us what likely would have been the game winning FG from inside the 30 with no time left. Poor clock management on an Oregon too many men on the field call and a boneheaded play by our QB to not get down in time to call the final TO we had was the perfect cherry on top for a failure of a night out west.

Overall Oregon played a perfect game, had literally everything go their way and they still only won by 1 on their home field in that environment. Let’s see how things play out and what a rematch holds on this side of the country in BTN Championship game. *Assuming we fix the aforementioned above issues*

10/10 for entertainment
2/10 for Defense and adjustments
2/10 for penalties

Loved the write up!

I haven’t read anything but as a former soccer player for 30 years, I’m guessing that kick was an intentional attempt at exactly what occurred? Anyone confirm?

Soccer player?!! I didn't know you were a commie!

Honestly I am not sure. It looked like a crazy squib kick! I think they got lucky that it hit our guy directly. If it was intentional, there was some hell of good accuracy on the account of their kicker!

If it was a soccer ball, it’s entirely possible… in fact likely that you could hit someone at that range. I don’t know how likely it would be with a football, but my gut tells me it’s less than 50%.

Either way ballsy as all get out.
